First, I'm amazed this thread has remained open for so long. Second, I'm amazed that I finally found some real recipes for my favorite hot dog sauce.
I grew up in the Kingston area in the 1950's/60's, so reading this thread has been a real blast from the past. When I was a kid my mother would take my brother and I to Uncle George's as a special treat. And I went to KHS, so had many a lunch at the place on B'Way just down the street from the high school. I've been living on the west coast for some 30+ years now, and in all that time I've never had a better hot dog. We had close relatives in Port Jervis too, but I never got to try the Texas Lunch version.
I can't wait to try both versions of the recipes posted in this thread, and want to thank the authors from the bottom of my heart. I've been looking for something authentic for years.
A couple of folks have posted here that they have the real recipe and that it's nothing like what has been shown already. They haven't posted the recipes they have though. I wish they would.
On a side note, there used to be a guy with a small food truck that would pull up in front of KHS every day for lunch. One of the best things he had was a grilled Italian Sausage (hot or sweet, your choice) sandwich served on a soft roll and smothered with grilled onions and peppers. Delicious, especially with a Coke.
Another regional favorite was a fried egg, bacon and cheese sandwich served on a Kaiser Roll. I've never even seen a Kaiser roll outside of the northeast. That sandwich made for a hearty breakfast. And don't get me started on New York pizza. Trust me, no matter how they try, there's nothing quite like it in SF.
Again, thanks guys for the recipes, and thanks to all you folks from the Hudson and Delaware valleys for the memories. This was fun reading, and I'm looking forward to some good eats.
